All Things Must Pass

My favorite Beatle died this morning. He was the quiet one, so overshadowed by Paul and John, I thought I might stand a chance with him. He wrote some of my favorite Beatle songs like Piggies, Here Comes the Sun, While my Guitar Gently Weeps and Across the Universe.

He did the Concert for Bangladesh long before Live Aid. He brought sitar music to America. He did music videos way before MTV. He made Rockabilly music palatable, make that enjoyable, for me with his Traveling Willburies albums. In fact, according to Tom Petty, George was the backbone and the force that made one of the biggest collaborative bands a reality. He was good enough that Chet Atkins marveled at him and considered him a musical genius. He was modest enough to appear in cameos without billing (as in the Rutles film All You Need Is Cash). He started Handmade Films (sparked by funding problems for Monty Python's Life of Brian), a company that actually did for film makers what Apple Records was SUPPOSED to do for musicians. He was modest enough that I know he did things about which we've never heard. He had a coy smile. I'll bet he had a quiet laugh.

He always had a lit cigarette in his hand. He died of cancer.

Koo koo ka choo. :-p
